Sat, Apr 29: Mahe (Victoria), Seychelles

We arrived mid-day at the capital of the Seychelles.  They are the largest granite islands in the world…most islands are coral atolls or volcanic.  It was a bit overcast when we arrived but the islands are pretty.  Mahe from the ship looks to be just another port town tucked up against the mountains…pretty but nothing exceptional.

After lunch we boarded a catamaran for a ride out into the bay where we fed the fish and were to take a ride on a glass-bottomed boat.  While the first group went out we stayed topside and fed the fish.

The first group on the boat came back saying that the visibility was lousy with almost no fish and that the boat was hot and stuffy with no air conditioning…so the second half of the group opted to not go out.  So the boat then headed out further into the bay.  The surrounding islands were pretty.

The plan was to anchor near the reef where most of us went snorkeling for about an hour.  We saw a reasonable number of fish around the reef...and Mary tried out her GoPro.

Tara, our guide, does not swim well.  There was a current and she could not swim against it – no fins – so was being taken away from the boat.  So one of the crew who was in a dingy watching out for the snorkelers rescued her.

It started raining on the way back to the ship.  Like many tropical islands the rains come and go and usually don’t last too long.  It had stopped raining by the time we docked.

We hit the room to shower and change.  Dinner was in the restaurant and we sat with two couples from Australia and a couple from Las Vegas that we had met before.  Paul was tired and decided to hit the bed early.  Mary was going to take a walk but it was raining so hard that she also headed back to the room for an early bedtime.
